Welcome
Welcome to the sixth edition of our regular e-newsletter where we try to keep you up to date on things happening at Greentop Circus...

New Greentop Interns

As part of it's commitment to continue the professional development of it's CIP graduates, Greentop has taken on two new student interns for an initial period of three months. The two new members of staff are Beth Caudle and Delia Taffler, both graduates from our recent CIP course. They were chosen by their audition and interview from a shortlist of five very talented applicants. "We are very proud to have these two new interns as part of our team, we can't wait to get them invloved in the hussle and bussle of life here at Greentop" said James Harkness, Event Manager.

The interns will be working on a range of charitable projects for Greentop, including community outreach , workshops, and office support. In addition the interns will get many opportunities to 'learn the ropes' of being a circus performer through work-shadowing, regular training, workshops and assisting our professional artists.

CIP Show Inspires Poetry

Greentop has started to work with local poet and writer Geena Andrews and we asked her to review the recent Circus in Performance show. She was so inspired by the students' performances that she wrote us TWO sonnets!

So here they are.

Sonnet for Greentop.
(With Apologies to Mr. W. Shakespeare.)

How quickly doth each “End of term” assault us
with attitude. The artistes hold their gaze……
“We dare you, sitting, safely there, to fault us”.
What could we do, but pour upon them, praise?
The brazen and the brave were sorely tested.
Trapeze and wire were conquered. (As were we).
Pain, sweat and tears, so valiantly invested.
How could we not award a cheer or three?
Young Duncan Cosgrove, (clad in foil). High flying!
Why did he not spontaneously combust?
Ms. Ledger’s hoop-work was electrifying!
Pairs on trapeze! That takes a deal of trust.
This sonnet, fourteen lines, just will not do.
So gird thy loins for Sonnet number two.

Sonnet for Greentop Mark II

A tale of World War Two unfolded, darkly
upon trapeze….The audience held its breath!
The joy of ‘circus life’ contrasting starkly
with sequins, sirens, passion, love and death.
“Bring on the clowns”…They did! To ease the tension
they gave us kids, with wanton, wicked glee.
Belief was gladly put into suspension.
“Ruth Sheridan! You must not climb that tree!”
Then magic! ‘Neath a duvet spread before us,
as Emily dreamed in luminescent awe,
lights, tights and frights became the final chorus.
We stood as one and begged, in vain, for more.
Well done to trainers, artistes, one and all.
You have the magic power to enthral.

(Geena Andrews 2009).

It's not every day you get a Shekespearean sonnet written for you, and we've got two! We look forward to working with Geena again soon and we hope you agree that this is an original, fun and engaging way to review and reflect what goes on at Greentop.

Still CIP related, Elly Clibbens one of the graduates from this year's CIP course, has posted some images from this year's show on Facebook, they can be be viewed from the Greentop Facebook page.

The CAT is out of the BAG!

catbag

Never ones to shy away from entertaining acronyms, Greentop's new action groups - the Circus Action Team (CAT) and the Building Action Group (BAG) are progressing well. We have already had some people register their interest in joining these two new groups.

CAT is meeting on Thursday 28th May at 3.30pm to 4.30pm and will look at issues relating to circus activities in the centre, such as organising cabarets and shows, advising on public and professional workshops and evening classes. If you want to join this group call James on 0114 244 8828.

BAG will meet on a Tuesday monthly, the date for their meeting has yet to be finalised. They have already had a preliminary meeting to look at the scope of the group and see what work needs to be done. The first job is the renovation of the old green door to the centre so as from this Monday can all centre users use this as the main entrance and exit for the building.

Key holders will need to contact Frances to sort out keys for the new door, her number is 0114 244 8828.

Friends of Sheffield Youth Circus

"They're the future of circus. We need to keep the opportunity for them alive" Says Nikki Davies of Friends of Sheffield Youth Circus describing their mammoth fund raising drive. "Many people are working hard to secure small amounts of funding, support in kind and prizes, but all extra is welcome". The message from the Friends of Sheffield Youth Circus is clear that all help is welcome. So can you or anyone you know secure prizes from companies such as free tickets, T-shirts or other prizes?

***STOP PRESS***

Please help! We have been offered the chance to fund raise for the Youth Circus at Sainsbury's on Wreakes Lane, Dronfield, Sheffield on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th May. We will be walking on stilts and shaking buckets! If you have a spare hour between 10am and 4pm each day come down and show your support. Please call the office to let us now if you are coming
on 0114 244 8828.

Sponsor a Child

One way to support Youth Circus is to sponsor a child. This is a great way to offer a place to a child whose family can't afford to pay for them to come to Youth Circus. The suggested sponsorship rates are as follows: one week costs £7, one term costs £72 and one year costs £126. For this you will receive a personalised letter or drawing and an invite to the end of term show.

To support the Sheffield Youth Circus, through volunteering, fundraising or sponsorship, call Greentop on 0114 244 8828.
