Welcome
Welcome to the seventh edition of our regular
e-newsletter where we try to keep you up to date on things happening
at Greentop Circus...
Summer
of Circus

The Greentop
new summer programme is now live! We have called it the 'Summer
of Circus' and we think we have something for everyone.
There are new weekly
classes in dance fusion, hulahoop fitness, acrobatics and acrobalance
that everyone can come along to, get fit and have fun while they
do it.
We also have new monthly
weekend workshops for beginners in static trapeze, swinging trapeze,
burlesque dance and monthly 'circus for everyone' taster days.
See the website
or download
the flyer for more information.
To book onto any of these
workshops, call us on 0114 244 8828.
Butterfingers
Sponsors Youth Circus
Butterfingers,
our main supplier of circus equipment has very kindly offered to
sponsor two Youth Circus places. This has come about off
the back of the Friends of Sheffield Youth Circus' fund raising
activities and gives the campaign a real boost in terms of both
moral and money!
"We were really
keen to show our support for all the good work Greentop does with
the Sheffield Youth Circus and we are delighted to have this opportunity
to help out" said Steph from Butterfingers.
Butterfingers has also
pledged some new equipment for the Youth Circus, which will be really
well received by the kids. If you want to get your own circus equipment
or even buy some for the Youth Circus, the Butterfingers' website
is www.butterfingers.co.uk.
Sainsbury's
Fundraising Success
The Friends of
Sheffield Youth Circus recently spent two days fundraising at Sainsbury's
on Wreakes Lane, Dronfield, Sheffield on Sunday 24th and Monday
25th May. There were kids, moms, dads, tutors, friends
and performers who came down to help by stiltwalking, juggling,
packing bags for people and teaching circus skills. Over the two
days they raised over £300, well done to all concerned and
thank you to Sainsbury's for their help.
The
CAT's First Meeting
The first meeting
of the CAT (Circus Action Team) took place on Thursday
28th May.
It was well attended by people from the evening classes, centre
users, office staff, interns and performers. The main topics of
discussion were the purpose and scope of the group, making sure
this amazing resource gets fully used and specifically
the new 'Summer of Circus' programme, the Transform initiative and
the Greentop Secret Cabaret, coming up on the 31st July. The
meeting was a constructive and positive and start for the CAT.

wants to be part of this group, call James on 0114 244 8828
Greentop
Interns' First Week
Beth and Delia
are the new Greentop interns, this is how their fist week has gone.
‘Are clowns filed
under C?...’ We wondered, walking to our first day as interns
at Greentop Circus Centre. As members of the CIP
course this year we had practically lived in the centre, training
late in to the evening and returning early the next day. But we
realized that we knew very little about what goes on ‘behind
the scenes’, behind those windows you can peer through when
you’re sky high up a rope.
Having completed our first week , we understand a little more about
the unseen work that goes on so that circus can happen in the space.
We’ve composed letters to help fund our brilliant youth circus
and met with centre users to discuss future uses for the space.
Our publicity ‘rampage’ to spread the word about the
great upcoming workshops this summer has also begun. Although our
time as interns has only just started, we’re delighted to
be helping to raise the profile of this amazing resource and the
vibrant community that we share. But we’ll still be up a rope
or mucking about with trowels whenever we can!
Charlie
Competition
Charlie Ledger
who recently finished the Greentop CIP course, has been shortlisted
for the Shell Livewire Young Entrepeneur Grand Ideas Award for her
business - Seduced By Circus.
There are eight businesses shortlisted including hers and all the
businesses featured had to submit a video (which she didn't have
long to put together!) the videos are now online on the Shell Livewire
Website www.shell-livewire.org for people to see.
The video with the most votes will automatically win a prize of
£1,000 to help fund their new business, and then the Shell
panel of independent judges will select (up to) 4 further £1,000
prize winners from the shortlist.
We wish Charlie the best
of luck!
Craig
visits Circomedia
“Part of
my job as Chief Executive is to build strong links with other key
organisations around the country, so I have been on my travels visiting
the other circus schools. This month I had the pleasure
of visiting Circomedia in Bristol. It was a great opportunity to
meet with lots of the staff and tutors and compare notes. I’ve
come back full of inspiration on a range of topics- from running
a circus centre (both Greentop and Circomedia have converted churches)
to developing the curriculum for circus based qualifications, plus
it was good to see how another circus school deals with technical,
rigging and health and safety issues, and also their creative direction.
I also got to see the
end of course show performed by the students from the 2 year BTEC
course- this was just breathtaking- moving, exciting and had a really
strong emphasis on performance with lots of narrative and characterisation
running through it.
I meet regularly with
the heads of the other circus schools, but nothing beats getting
out and about and seeing how it works in reality. Next stop on my
roadtrip will be Skylight in Rochdale, and then to No Fit State
when their tour of Tabu returns to Cardiff.”
Cabaret
Twilight
A new show is
coming to Greentop called Cabaret Twilight, brought to us by In
The Boat Theatre Company which is an integrated company of artists
with and without disabilities from Sheffield. It is one
of the long-term projects of acclaimed combined arts company, Action
Space Mobile, based in Barnsley, supported by Arts Council England.
Cabaret Twilight is their
brand new production that entertains its audience with dance, live
music provided by the brilliant In the Boat Band, songs and clever
interplay between characters and their projections in film and image.
It is a show that invites its audience to share the same environment,
a place between fantasy and reality. It has a multi-talented cast
of 15 adults with learning disabilities and 4 artists from Action
Space Mobile.
In the Boat has toured
extensively over the years in the UK and in Europe. It aims to show
the very particular talents of people with learning disabilities
so that they can be appreciated and included in the mainstream cultural
mix of our diverse society. The members meet weekly to devise and
rehearse an annual original production.
The show opens at the
Greentop Circus Centre on Friday 3rd Jul , with performances at
2pm and 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £10 (£8 concessions)
can be booked by ringing the Greentop Circus Centre directly on
0114 244 8828.

any stories you would like to include in our newsletter, email them
